Why I’m in China

Currently, I am a student at HIT (Harbin Institute of Technology in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, People’s Republic of China, studying Chinese. I’m doing a little web design here, but mostly just class work, etc.
In "real life" I’m a computer programmer, doing contract work for various companies. I specialized in assemblers (many), Clipper, Palm applications, C++, Java, and "lower level" types of programming, such as device drivers, data collection, etc. I’ve also worked on a lot of applications over the years.
I decided that I wanted to try and set up an international consulting/programming company and I looked around for the best place for this. My first choice was India, since I have studied Sanskrit and Hindi for several years at college, and also travel there already. However, after thinking about it for a year or two, I decided that there would be a lot more business opportunities in China. The average wage and cost of living is lower, which allows more competitive rates, and there is less international competition, since it is a little more difficult to get good English speakers here. By "good", I mean excellent business level writing and speaking skills.
With my long background in applications, design, and writing, I feel that this can be combined with an excellent talent pool to make a good company.
Before starting a company, however, I feel it’s important that I also be "somewhat" conversant in Chinese. I won’t be able to approach the detail and subtlety that a native speaker would, but I plan on being a principal interface between English speaking clients, and my staff. I plan on taking a couple of years to study Chinese first, and then I’ll seriously look at locations and people for setting up a company.
